ジョン・ハービソンは、アメリカが世界に誇る作曲家のひとり。交響曲(6曲)、オペラ(3作)、協奏曲(12曲)、ほかにも5曲の弦楽四重奏曲や大規模な合唱作品などを作曲している、アメリカの大御所です。シカゴ響、ニューヨーク・フィルなどから委嘱作品多数、レヴァインのメトロポリタン歌劇場就任25周年のために歌劇「華麗なるギャツビー」を作曲、さらに「ヨハネパウロ二世即位25周年を記念する和解のコンサート」のためにも声楽作品を作曲するなど、アメリカ内外の大きな仕事を多数手がけてきました。今回は、カメラータ・パシフィカの委嘱作でもある「STRING TRIO」のほか、ソロとカノンが楽しめる「SONGS AMERICA LOVES TO SING」、無伴奏ヴァイオリン作品「FOUR SONGS OF SOLITUDE」が収録されており、ハービソンの精緻な世界を楽しむことができます。演奏を手掛けるのはアメリカの西海岸を中心に活躍する、トップ・クラスのアーティストが終結したアンサンブル、カメラータ・パシフィカ。アメリカの精鋭陣が、アメリカを代表する作曲家の作品を真摯に奏でています。

An American original, John Harbison has never been tied to a particular method or style, nor has his music been eclectic merely for the sake of change. This 2014 CD from Harmonia Mundi shows three distinct approaches in as many chamber works, showing his basic concerns with melody, counterpoint, and writing idiomatically for his ensembles.
