Includes music from the films "Young Bess," "King Of Kings," "El Cid," "Quo Vadis" and "Ben Hur." This little-known and oft-overlooked collection of Miklos Rozsa film themes will prove highly desirable to the composer's fans, assembling as it does many of Rozsa's grandest themes from his scores for epic-scale movies, all well handled by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Rainer Padberg, with Christopher Bowers-Broadbent on the organ. The scores represented include King of Kings, Young Bess, Julius Caesar, Story of Three Loves, and Ben-Hur. Some of the tempos are slightly slower than Rozsa himself ever took them, but that just gives you more of a chance to savor the inner detail in the scoring in greater relief. Toward that end, the sound is excellent, clean, sharp, and rich -- and it pumps up nicely at the higher volume settings, with lots of depth as well -- and the annotation by Tony Thomas is reasonably thorough. ~ Bruce Eder
