A native of Xenia OH, trombonist Vic Dickenson developed his awesome chops during the 1920s, anchored numerous big bands throughout the '30s and began achieving national recognition as a powerhouse player during the '40s. Released in 2001, EPM Musique's A True Trombone Master presents 19 well-chosen examples of Vic Dickenson's best work as a dynamically swinging sideman during the years 1940-1946, often tapping the Blue Note traditional jazz catalog for extra kicks. Following an extra bold taste of his work with the Count Basie Orchestra, Dickenson is heard with ensembles headed by saxophonist Benny Carter, clarinetist Edmond Hall, formidable New Orleans improviser Sidney Bechet, and heavyweight piano masters James P. Johnson, and Albert Ammons. Dickenson was able to hold his ground and swing like mad in any company, even in groups led by trumpeters Louis Armstrong, Sidney DeParis, and Hot Lips Page, saxophonists Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young, and pianist Eddie Heywood, a popular interpreter of melodies who was somewhat notorious for upstaging his sidemen in public. This collection is paralleled by Breaks, Blues & Boogies, a useful Vic Dickenson anthology put out by Topaz Jazz in 1997. Even with six titles in common, owning both editions would not be excessive or overindulgent. ~ arwulf arwulf
