Featuring some of the biggest names in New York jazz at the time, New York Legends 1929-1948 is a solid collection. Excellent contributions from Louis Jordan, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Hot Lips Page make this one of the better jazz compilations from this period. There is a distinct lack of any material that may be too obscure, which is a plus to casual listeners, but may turn off jazz fans who probably have much of the material on the album. The other major complaint would be that if this really is a collection of popular commercial jazz, then there should be some more recognizable tracks. What is here is quite good, but to someone unfamiliar with the genre there is little here that they might recognize. Still, any compilation that features so many classic artists is still good, and this is no exception to that rule. Anyone looking for a good album to help kick start a jazz collection should look here, but genre fans will probably not need much of the music found here. ~ Bradley Torreano
