WEST END BLUES is an almost perfect compilation of Louis Armstrong's early work. Culled from the first studio recordings with his own groups--the incomparably innovative Hot Fives and Sevens--WEST END BLUES focuses on what is unquestionably Armstrong's most inspired, ground-breaking material. There is not one of these 24 tracks where his trumpet doesn't swing like a fist, or project its shining tone and gorgeous vibrato. Satch is in prime singing form too, on tracks such as "I'm Not Rough," "I'm A Ding Dong Daddy" and "Heebie Jeebies" (which features the first ever scat solo).
The instrumentals far outweigh the vocal numbers however, and it is on tunes like "Potato Head Blues," "Struttin' With Some Barbecue" and "Beau Koo Jack" that one truly marvels not only at Armstrong's prodigious gifts, but those of sidemen like guitarist Lonnie Johnson and pianist Earl Hines. WEST END BLUES is soulful, intelligent, eminently enjoyable and wholly original. What can touch Armstrong's version of King Oliver's "West End Blues?" Outside of owning all of of the original discs on which these recordings first appeared, one would be hard pressed to find a better sample of Armstrong's earliest, and finest, period.
