This collection presents some of the earliest Ellington on record--in some settings where he's not even billed as the leader, or playing his own material, and in some cases, as a sideman! This music was recorded in 1929-31, in the years preceding the Swing Era. The groups Ellington was "in" (his name was not up-front) were The Whoopee Makers, Earl Jackson & his Musical Champions, Six Jolly Jesters and The Jungle Band. There's a definite treat here: the legendary dancer/entertainer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, backed by Irving Mills & His Hotsy Totsy Gang. (Mills was a long-time Ellington associate.)
There's some non-Duke gems here: Hoagy Carmichael's "Rockin' Chair" as well as Ellington classics-to-be like "Rockin' in Rhythm" and "Creole Rhapsody," rendered by a smaller band. Tempos are faster than the later Swing Era sound, and the accent is less "orchestral" overall than tight, spunky, good-time tunes (Remember, in these years, jazz was pop music!). This is Good-Time jazz, tap your foot, and be transported to another era. The recording quality is crisp and clear--highly recommended for Ellington fans, old-time music fans, those interested in the roots of swing, Squirrel Nut Zippers fans...
