Although the exact dates of the original recording and release dates of some of this material is unclear, it's known for sure that all predate his signing to Capitol in 1957. Eight of them appeared as 1955-1956 singles on the small Pep label; the others were originally issued, in unauthorized fashion, on the Chesterfield and La Brea labels (except for the previously unreleased demo "Blue Love"). While the fidelity and production is not as slick as Owens would be accustomed to on Capitol, and the arrangements less heavy on the more electric elements of Owens' subsequent '50s and '60s work, it's still unmistakably Owens, and pretty good. These are virtually all original compositions, and comprise a quality mixture of rhythmic earthy honky tonkers and slower weepers, Owens already a strong and versatile singer. One of those Pep singles, incidentally, is the rockabilly single he cut as Corky Jones, "Hot Dog"/"Rhythm and Booze," and shows that he was quite competent in that style, although he didn't follow it as a career path. The most oddball item is the most ill-fitting: The "Blue Love" demo, an ordinary mid-tempo Western swing number, includes not just steel guitar but also trumpet in the arrangement. ~ Richie Unterberger
