Chicago thrash jammers Oozing Wound played a monumental show with Brian Chippendale's (Lightning Bolt) noisy solo project Black Pus shortly after the release of his brilliantly scuzzy 2013 album All My Relations. The two acts leveled the audience that night and became friends, ultimately working toward this split release, each contributing previously unreleased tracks that don't quite fall in line with the rest of their respective catalogs. Chippendale, known both in Lightning Bolt as well as Black Pus for his signature end-of-the-world drum style and indiscernibly muddled vocals, takes several left turns with leadoff track "Blood Will Run." The song features a simple, straightforward beat and possibly the cleanest vocals in Chippendale's recording history. The lyrics also take on a characteristically political stance, as the song is inspired by the 2012 shooting of Florida teenager Jordan Davis by stranger Michael Dunn, who shot Davis in a gas station parking lot after demanding that he and his friends turn down the music coming out of their car. It's easily the most coherent the project has ever been, musically, though Chippendale quickly gets back to his old tricks with "Total Eclipse," the 14-minute lo-fi noise-fest that follows. Oozing Wound's contributions come in the form of three tracks edited down from hours of studio experimentation. Sludgy, grueling jams with titles like "Ganja Gremlin" and "All Things Must Pass Out" blur into each other somewhat, but keep up a punishing energy, blasting out raw metal riffing and powerhouse drumming before flickering out of sight as the tape speed slows to a crawl and the album ends. ~ Fred Thomas
