With this circa 1995 compilation, Inspiral Carpets called it a day (though they did regroup years later). These early singles showcase a group who play with nimble, slightly manic dexterity, all held together in an organ-drenched daze that placed them firmly in the Madchester scene. Their most sublime moment comes with 1990's "This is How it Feels," which remained the Inspiral Carpet's biggest hit. As the collection progresses chronologically, they also begin to explore new territory, notably on the single-only "I Want You," a duet with The Fall's Mark E. Smith. A band ultimately more adept at singles than at full albums, THE SINGLES remains Inspiral Carpets' definitive collection.
