Recorded in Bulgaria with the Bulgarian National Symphony, this is a very different release for clarinetist Ken Peplowski. Although he does play brief unaccompanied versions of "Milestones," "Anthropology," "Single Petal of a Rose" and Jimmy Hamilton's "Duet," Peplowski also performs Witold Lutoslawski's "Dance Preludes," Darius Milhaud's "Concerto for Clarinet & Orchestra" (originally written for Benny Goodman), Plamen Djurov's "Cadenza" (which finds Peplowski switching to tenor), and Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman." In general, Peplowski's playing emphasizes his cool tone and strong technique. He pulls off the surprising classical-oriented set fairly well. ~ Scott Yanow
