Personnel: Robin Williamson (vocals, harp, mandolin, fiddle, keyboards, percussion).
Recording information: Albany Productions, Cardiff, Wales (05/1998-07/1998).
Arranger: Robin Williamson.
Williamson was incredibly prolific throughout the '90s, releasing such varied and compelling albums as THE ISLAND OF THE STRONG DOOR, RING DANCE, and THE OLD FANGLED TONE. A JOB OF JOURNEY WORK is his first album devoted exclusively to traditional songs. While the selections are largely drawn from the Celtic tradition, some originated on-or were filtered through-American shores.
Williamson himself handles the bulk of the instrumentation, playing harp, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, whistle, percussion, and keyboards. A few numbers feature co-producer, keyboardist, and frequent Williamson cohort Lawson Dando. Williamson's family provides occasional backup singing (wife Bina appears on many of his recordings). The settings are nicely varied, making for a fully compelling album experience. Williamson's notes briefly detail the genesis of the project and provide a helpful glossary of some of the Scottish words heard in the songs.
