Any collection that calls itself Real Hip-Hop: Best of D & D, Vol. 1 has a very clear idea about what is and what isn't real hip-hop -- or at least one hopes that they do. And this 16-track disc does have a fairly clear focus. Basically, this collection maintains that real hip-hop is from the East Coast, performed by artists as diverse as Nas, Jeru the Dmaja, Smif-N-Wessun, Blahzay Blahzay, the Notorious BIG, the Lost Boyz, Gangstarr, Jay-Z, and KRS-One. Which means real hip-hop has a bit of gangsta in it, but no G-funk, and it's lyrically heavy. Even if you disagree with this theory, it's still hard to deny that this isn't a bad listen at all. Definitive, no, but it is arguably real hip-hop and all the better for it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
