During the early and mid-'70s, Art Webb appeared on several notable jazz recordings, including Norman Connors' dates for Cobblestone, Pharoah Sanders' Village of the Pharoahs, Stanley Clarke's Children of Forever, and Horacee Arnold's Tales of the Exonerated Flea. In 1977, he released two dates as a leader for the Atlantic label. This Expansion reissue combines them on one set, only a few years after Wounded Bird reissued them individually. Mr. Flute, driven by the great songwriter, arranger, and producer Patrick Adams, has a crossover disco orientation similar to that of contemporaneous releases from fellow flutists, including Hubert Laws' The Chicago Theme and Herbie Mann's Adams-led Super Mann. The funkier Love Eyes, produced by John Lee and Jerry Schoenbaum, involves many of James Mtume's associates (but not Mtume himself), including drummer Howard King, guitarist Reggie Lucas, keyboardist Hubert Eaves, and vocalist Tawatha Agee, who shines on versions of "You Can't Hide Love" and "Devotion." Both albums are of roughly the same quality -- not quite exceptional, but easy to enjoy. ~ Andy Kellman

フルート・フュージョン・クラシックスの名作が2イン1で再発。アルバム『MR.FLUTE』はディスコ界で有名なパトリック・アダムスをプロデュースに迎え1977年にアトランティックからリリースされた作品。タイトル曲はスペクタクルなテーマからグルーヴ感あふれるリズムとコーラスが気持ち良い。“DOBIE"はファンキー・メロウ&グルーヴの典型的なサウンドでキラー・チューン。“MELON GROVE"はラテン・フュージョンでジェリー・フリードマンのギターも素晴らしい。全編ディスコ・フレーヴァーを散りばめつつフュージョン、ラテン、ソウルがブレンドさせたアレンジはかなりクールです。8曲目からはアルバム『LOVE EYES』を収録。こちらはロニー・キューバー(bs)、ハイラム・ブロック(g)、ジョン・ファディス(tp)、オナージェ・アラン・ガムス(key)他豪華メンバーが参加。EW&Fの“YOU CAN'T HIDE LOVE"ではヴォーカルのタワサ・エイジーをフィーチャー、“FREE"他ファンキー&メロウなサウンドが堪能できる。
