Despite the album title, taken from Ute Lemper's showcase song in the musical CHICAGO, jazz is only part of this remarkable singer's repertoire. A paragon of European art song in the Kurt Weill tradition (Weill, along with Marlene Dietrich, is one of Lemper's biggest influences, and Lemper essays several of his songs here), Lemper is equally fond of Broadway show tunes and cabaret.
More so than any of her other albums, the best-of compilation ALL THAT JAZZ touches on every facet of her musical personality, from a handful of classic show tunes like CABARET's "Don't Tell Mama," to brilliant reinterpretations of Weill's "Alabama Song" and Edith Piaf's "La Vie en Rose." If you became intrigued with Lemper through her pop-crossover album PUNISHING KISS, ALL THAT JAZZ is an excellent summation of her earlier career.
