Recording information: Channel One Recording Studio, Kingston, Jamaca. Leroy Smart is somewhat of a transitional figure in Jamaican reggae. He began his career solidly in the roots tradition, but his impassioned (some would say overwrought) and gravel-filled vocals coupled with his bad boy, pre-gangsta public image helped him morph easily into the dancehall era, although his focus continued to be on a roots-lineage mix of conscious themes and straight-ahead love songs. This set is fairly representative, and includes the obvious but charming " "Reggae Is Jah Music" (along with a dub version of the song), the subtly impressive "This World," and the fun "Sugar My Coffee," although nothing is quite at the level of his signature "Pride & Ambition," which is not included here. ~ Steve Leggett
