Recorded live in Stuttgart, Germany; Munich, Germany; Birmingham, England in 1994. Includes liner notes by Neil Jeffries. The long-standing acrimony between Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Gillan is no secret and by 1989, Gillan had left Deep Purple for the second time. By 1993, Gillan came aboard once again to cut THE BATTLE RAGES ON and soon after Deep Purple toured Europe in support of it. COME HELL OR HIGH WATER is the only official live document of this ill-fated tour (Blackmore left Purple as the band was ready to go into the Japanese leg of the tour). Despite all the tension that must have been going on off-stage, Deep Purple funneled this aggression into these German and English performances. These nine songs are drawn from the past three decades and include newer epics such as the sweeping "Anya" and the driving "Twist in the Tale," along with the haunting title track of the band's 1984 comeback album, PERFECT STRANGERS. Other highlights include the longtime concert favorite "Black Night," which goes back to the band's classic LIVE IN JAPAN album and a 10-minute-plus version of Deep Purple's signature tune, "Smoke on the Water," complete with audience call-and-response.
