Recorded in London in 1980, this set features a hastily assembled band that backs Alex Chilton with The Soft Boys' rhythm section and guitarist Knox. Since Chilton's work succeeds by always teetering on the brink of disaster, the lack of prep time falls right in line with his general modus operandi. Chilton has never been one to spend much time gazing back at his own history, and only a handful of the songs on LONDON are drawn from past albums. There are a couple Big Star numbers, as well as a version of "The Letter," originally from those heady days when Chilton was on top of the charts as the 16-year-old lead singer for The Boxtops. Ever true to his wandering muse, Chilton encores alone on the Carter Family's "No More the Moon Shines On Lorena."
