黒々とした濃厚なヴォーカル、敏腕ミュージシャンたちによる洗練された演奏、ストリングスをフィーチャーした流麗なサウンド、黒人社会に向けた強烈なメッセージ・・・ 米・フィラデルフィアを中心に、1970年代に隆盛を極め、現代のR&Bはもちろん、あらゆるダンス・ミュージックの基礎となった「フィリー・ソウル」。 とりわけ、プロデューサー:ケニー・ギャンブル&レオン・ハフが、1971年に設立したPhiladelphia International Records (PIR)からは、オージェイズやハロルド・メルヴィン&ブルーノーツ、ビリー・ポール、スリー・ディグリーズ、そしてハウス・バンドでもあるMFSBなどスターが次々と誕生し、フィリー・ソウル=PIRといっても過言ではない存在感を発揮。1970年代後半以降も、ソロ歌手として独立したテディ・ペンダーグラスやパティ・ラベル、そしてモータウンから移り再出発を図ったマイケル・ジャクソン率いるジャクソンズなど、現在のR&Bシーンにも大きな影響を与えるアーティストやヒット曲を量産し続けた。このプロダクトは、フィリー・ソウルのみならず70年代ソウルを彩った誰もが認める名盤から、現在のダンス・ミュージックにも直結するツウ好みなアルバムまで、ソウル・ファンのツボをついた20作品がボックスに収められている。
