ROUND MIDNIGHT sticks to the standards, opening with a haunting version of the title track, a simple and stark dialogue between Chet Baker's trumpet and Jean-Paul Floren's lyrical guitar playing. The rest of the tracks are recorded with a quartet, sometimes substituting guitar for piano, while three tracks feature Rachel Gould's androgynous vocals. Obviously influenced by Baker's vocal style, Gould's voice has a slick quality that lacks the trumpeter's natural emotional depth, though it's not unpleasant to listen to, and her treatment of Miles Davis' "All Blues" with Baker's quartet is one of the album's high points. Baker's playing at this point had matured into a breathier tone and was more abstract than his earlier work; he retained his understated emotional lyricism to the end.
