Compilation producers: Tom Parkinson, Rupert Lord. Digitally mastered by Robert Vosgien (Capitol Mastering). Virgin's This is Cult Fiction boasts a play on Quentin Tarantino's seminal film Pulp Fiction in its title and its track listing builds (if not outright steals) from that soundtrack, along with other similar cult films with cool soundtracks -- like Reservoir Dogs, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks and Trainspotting. Well, that's not true for the entire disc, since the midsection is devoted to themes from Hill Street Blues, Charlie's Angels, Taxi and a re-recording of something from Miami Vice, plus themes from Mission: Impossible, Shaft, Hawaii Five-O, Batman, Dr. No and Midnight Cowboy. So, it's really a bit of a mess, containing a bunch of stuff that could conceivably be thought of as cult soundtracks in some sense. No matter if the concept is a little fuzzy -- the end result is pretty entertaining all the same. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
