Although the Beastie Boys scored a major hit with the blend of rock and rap that was their 1986 classic LICSENCE TO ILL, Anthrax's song "I'm the Man" also proved to be one of the first rap-metal songs (paving the way for '90s efforts by Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit). Although it was available as a European b-side for quite some time before its official stateside release (when issued as part of the six-track I'M THE MAN EP in 1987), it automatically became the band's most well-known composition.
Though three versions of "I'm the Man" might a bit excessive (a mild "censored radio version," and the more coarse "def uncensored" studio and live versions), their differences are telling about the state of censorship in the record industry at the time of this release. Also included is a vicious studio cover of the Black Sabbath classic "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath," as well as a pair of live tracks, "I Am the Law" and "Caught in a Mosh." I'M THE MAN remains Anthrax's greatest-selling release to date (it eventually even went platinum), one that inspired countless metal bands to inject some rap into their rage.
