A maverick bandleader during the big-band era, saxophonist Charlie Barnet championed a hard-swinging style that went against the more commercial, sweet sound of the time. One of the first bandleaders to integrate his ensembles, Barnet was also a creatively open-minded leader who allowed for plenty of solos, many that hint at the burgeoning bebop sound. Barnet's band cut a distinctive path during its over-ten-year run, a path detailed on this two-disc anthology, The Charlie Barnet Collection, Vol. 1: 1935-1947. ~ Matt Collar
