もはやヒップホップというジャンルを超え、絶対的な信頼を集めるラッパー、ナズのデビュー作にしてヒップホップ・クラシックとなった『Illmatic』が、2014年で発売20周年を迎える。1994年4月にリリースされた『Illmatic』はデビュー作でありながら、DJプレミア、Qティップ、ピート・ロック、ラージ・プロフェッサーら東海岸を代表する気鋭のトラックメーカーたちが参加し、「N.Y. State Of Mind」「The World Is Yours」「One Love」「It Ain't Hard To Tell」などのヒットを生み、ヒップホップ専門誌「The Source」のレビューで、最高の評価にあたる「マイク5本」を獲得(史上初!)した名盤として知られる。今回、発売から20周年ということで、この『Illmatic』の20周年記念盤となる『Illmatic XX』がリリースされることが発表された。この『Illmatic XX』は2枚組構成。CD1はオリジナル・アルバムのリマスター盤。CD2には未発表曲「I'm a Villain」や、1993年、ストレッチ・アームストロング&ボビートのラジオ番組でのフリースタイル音源(未発表)、レアなリミックス音源などが収録される。

言わずもがななヒップホップにおけるど定番のクラシック。今聴いても超絶クールなNasのラップとトラックですが、本作の意義深い点の一つが、プロデューサーをオールスターで揃えた走りの作品だったことでは無いでしょうか。Large Professor、DJ Premier、Pete Rock、Q-Tip...まじ凄いっす。リマスターされた本盤は勿論のこと他にもファン垂涎の特典多し！
