The Best of the War Years features a selection of the "V-Disc'" recordings bandleader Duke Ellington recorded with his ensemble between 1940 and 1942. Considered prime years for the Ellington band, it was during this period that two Musicians' Union strikes hindered recording opportunities for them as well as other seminal swing bands. This made the V-Disc recordings -- records cut by the government for U.S. servicemen in World War II -- one of the only lasting accounts of many stellar ensembles. While not as thorough a collection as Collectables' V-Disc Recordings, which goes through 1945, this Stardust compilation filters the Ellington tracks down to a useful core list. Included are such classic numbers as "Take the 'A' Train," "Chelsea Bridge," and "Things Ain't What They Used to Be." ~ Matt Collar
