This two-disc set follows the legendary Blue Note label from its inception as the smallest of independent labels, issuing 12" jazz singles in the late '30s, through the early days of the label's development. Kicking off with early piano solos by Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, and Earl Hines, the first disc also includes seminal sides from Sidney Bechet, Edmond Hall, James P. Johnson, Ike Quebec, Tiny Grimes, and Jimmy Hamilton, before moving headlong into modern jazz with tracks from Tadd Dameron, Howard McGhee and Fats Navarro, and James Moody's Modernists. The second disc picks up the thread and continues the bop with sides from Thelonius Monk, Bud Powell, Wynton Kelly, Milt Jackson, Miles Davis, Horace Silver, J.J. Johnson, Clifford Brown, and Art Blakey. Part of a multi-volume, multi-disc set, this is some of America's most important jazz on one of its signature labels. This set also comes as a pair of enhanced CDs with a bonus interactive presentation. Essential. ~ Cub Koda
