Personnel: Javon Jackson (tenor saxophone); John Medeski (keyboards); Vernon Reid, Fareed Haque (guitar); Peter Washington (bass); Billy Drummond (drums); Cyro Baptista (percussion). Recorded at Sound On Sound Studio, New York, New York on June 2, 1997 and Sear Sound, New York, New York on June 10, 1997. Javon Jackson is best known as a hard bop tenor saxophonist inspired by Joe Henderson. On this CD, however, he really stretches himself and shows that he is continuing to develop an increasingly personal voice. In addition to two challenging originals and a blues, Jackson performs a Brazilian piece (which has a verbal introduction in Portuguese by percussionist Cyro Baptista) and songs by John Coltrane ("Exotica"), Carlos Santana and Tony Williams ("Emergency," from his Lifetime fusion period). With the assistance of a core group that includes acoustic guitarist Fareed Haque, funky organist John Medeski (from Medeski, Martin & Wood), bassist Peter Washington and drummer Billy Drummond (plus two guest appearances from the fiery rock guitarist Vernon Reid), Jackson plays some of the most adventurous solos of his career. Intriguing music. ~ Scott Yanow

商品の紹介

Down Beat (12/97, pp.67-70) - 4 stars (out of 5) - "...these guys may be throwing ideas against the wall, but a whole lot of them stick, and each sounds pretty damn cool." Musician (1/98, pp.94-95) - "...Jackson carries on [Art] Blakey's one-for-all/all-for-one tradition with a disc that often spotlights his bandmates rather than himself....he successfully traverses several musical styles without becoming either conventional or predictable..."
