Smith's gift as a superb keyboard technician is only half of his musical magic. The other is his astonishing ability to create moods both atmospherically cool and blisteringly energetic. JAZZ PROFILE, a sampling of the sides Smith cut for Blue Note in '50s, slides, oozes, and jumps, moving from spacious, sophisticated grooves to broiling hard-bop workouts. Uptempo numbers (like "Get Happy") cook alongside such mellower fare as a beautifully articulated version of "Summertime" featuring Lou Donaldson (sax), Kenny Burrell (guitar), and Art Blakey (drums). It is the later recordings, however, that really stand out. The laid-back sass of "Cherry," featuring fine guitar work from Grant Green, and the sly theme of "Minor Chant"--from 1960's BACK AT THE CHICKEN SHACK, probably Smith's finest album--are particularly noteworthy. JAZZ PROFILE, filled with fluid, rhythmically adroit, ambidextrous keyboard magic, is a perfect sampling of the legend's earliest concoctions of soul, jazz, and blues.
