It may be hard to get beyond the title of Rhino's series MTV the First 1000 Years, which just may be the dumbest title in the first 1000 years of the recording industry, but the actual discs aren't bad at all. For instance, the New Wave volume is a solid collection of 15 hits, all that received a considerable boost from the music television network. It plays a little fast and loose with the facts -- the B-52's are one of the major new wave bands, but "Love Shack" is not a new wave single, and MTV didn't play the Smiths' "How Soon Is Now?" outside of Post-Modern MTV and 120 Minutes -- but that doesn't really matter because the end result is pretty entertaining, thanks to such songs as "Rio," "Take on Me," "You Might Think," "True," "Karma Chameleon," "Cars," "Things Can Only Get Better," "I Ran (So Far Away)," "I Melt With You," and the peerless "One Thing Leads to Another." It may be a little more expensive than some new wave collections, but it's also more consistently enjoyable than many new wave collections. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
