Recorded live at the Monterey International Pop Festival, Monterey, California in 1967.
Released to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the world's first major rock festival, held in Monterey, California, in June 1967, MONTEREY INTERNATIONAL POP FESTIVAL is a solid two-disc anthology containing 26 legendary performances from the festival, several of them previously unavailable. Conceived by producer Lou Adler and Mamas and the Papas head John Phillips as a sort of coming-out party for the new trends in rock, Monterey Pop in retrospect is probably the most important and musically satisfying of all the major rock festivals, including Woodstock. Among the acts making their mainstream breakthrough during this weekend were the Who, Otis Redding, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane and Indian sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. All of them are present and accounted for here, along with previously unreleased performances by Simon and Garfunkel and Buffalo Springfield and tunes by less celebrated performers like Mike Bloomfield's blues-rock act the Electric Flag and South African jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela. Less exhaustive than the four-disc box set released to coincide with the 30th anniversary in 1997, MONTEREY INTERNATIONAL POP FESTIVAL is a better choice for the casual fan or interested newcomer.
