This entry in Rhino's HEART BEATS series, a special project of that label's Women's Product Development team, may or may not have originated as a semi-kitschy pajama party game. What eventually emerges however is the best grouping of romantic male singers--pop or jazz--to be found in one place since Sinatra took off his fedora. Luckily, the good women at Rhino have not limited themselves to the biggest names. Besides an early Sinatra version of "Night and Day" and Chet Baker's definitive "My Funny Valentine," there are selections from Bill Henderson, the two Ellington front men, Herb Jeffries and Al Hibbler, and hip jazz legend Jackie Paris, whose "Detour Ahead" inspires one to dig a little deeper. We also get to hear a most unkitschy Sammy Davis Jr. accompanied by Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almedia in an understated, still passionate reading of Kurt Weill's "Speak Low." The original crooner himself, Bing Crosby, makes a relaxed and welcome mid-'50s appearance on "Around the World." Of course, no collection of male vocalists could be considered complete without the late, great Johnny Hartman, whose "My One & Only Love" is taken from the justly celebrated JOHN COLTRANE & JOHNNY HARTMAN, perhaps the greatest jazz vocal session ever.
