THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT! THE ULTIMATE ANTHOLOGY OF M-G-M MUSICALS includes movie musical performances originally compiled for the films THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT! (1974), THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT, PART 2 (1976) and THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT! III (1994). The first four discs of the set include performances featured in the first two films, in their original, full-length versions instead of the edited versions used in the films. Disc 5 is identical to the 1994 soundtrack of THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT! III, which is available separately on CD and cassette on Angel [2435 55215]. Disc 6 adds additional selections from each of the three films, along with several performances from movie musicals not used in any of the films. Many of the tracks on disc 6 are previously unreleased in audio form.
Altogether, the 6-CD set compiles performances from 80 movie musicals originally released between 1929 and 1958, including "Going Hollywood," "Babes In Arms," "Meet Me In St. Louis," "Words And Music," "Annie Get Your Gun," "An American In Paris," "Singin' In The Rain" and "The Band Wagon."
This daunting six-CD box has it all over its predecessors, in scope, tracklist quality, and sound. At the time of its release in the mid-1990s, this was the most comprehensive overview of a movie studio's music output to be found on CD. Rhino was the first audio licensee of this material and had access not only to first-generation original audio sources but restored audio sources as well. In some instances, this means that one is getting the unmixed music tracks off of the original film recording sessions while in other cases, it allows one to hear the mastering elements off of which finished, restored film soundtracks are struck.
In either case, where one is listening to Jimmy Durante clowing at the piano with Frank Sinatra (from IT HAPPENED IN BROOKLYN) or Lena Horne (backed by Benny Carter and his orchestra) singing "Honeysuckle Rose" from THOUSANDS CHEER, the music is in its optimum state; and that means that the basses and percussion are deep and booming, the vocals are out in front, and the brasses and horns have a high-fidelity bite. The fact that most of the movies represented here pre-date the late 1940s and never had soundtrack releases of their own only enhances the value of this set
