Sun Records impresario Sam Phillips' backporch vision of Southern music was well ahead of his time. Phillips' belief in the innate creativity of poor Southern black and country white musicians, his impatience with the pop music status quo, and his predilection for the rawest, most emotionally hellbent artists gave Sun Records a spiritual aura that has not dimmed in 40 years.
