Issued simultaneously with My Whole World Ended/Feelin' Good -- a combination of David Ruffin's first two solo albums -- this two-disc package offers the singer's third and fourth albums. David Ruffin (1973) and Me 'n Rock 'n Roll Are Here to Stay (1974), along with those earlier albums, were reissued in one set by Hip-O Select in 2004, but that limited pressing sold out, necessitating Real Gone's two-for-one releases. This is another straightforward re-circulation with no bonus tracks. Neither David Ruffin nor Me 'n Rock 'n Roll was a commercial success; the decent ballad "Common Man," taken from the former, was the lone charting single, and it peaked at only number 84 on Billboard's R&B chart. Still, there are some standouts, including stirring versions of "I Miss You" and "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right," as well as "I Saw You When You Met Her" (one of Norman Whitfield's spacier productions) and authoritative take on "Smiling Faces Sometimes." The overdubbed crowd noise applied to the latter half of Me 'n Rock 'n Roll remains utterly baffling. ~ Andy Kellman
