ヒンデミット: ウェーバーの主題による交響的変容、プロコフィエフ: 組曲「3つのオレンジへの恋」、バルトーク: 「中国の不思議な役人」組曲 ［HDCD］

カンザス・シティのダウンタウン南の端、アートギャラリーが立ち並ぶ、この街でも最もアーティスティックと言われるクロスロード・アート・ディストリクトに隣接する小高い丘の上に2011年9月にオープンしたカウフマン・センター・フォー・ザ・パフォーミング・アーツ。1800席規模のプロセニアム形式のステージを持つ劇場と、1600席規模のクラシック用コンサートホールの2つのホールを持った大型複合文化施設です。クラシック用のコンサートホール(ヘルツベルク・ホール)は音響にも大変こだわっており、オーケストラの豊かな響きを十分に堪能することができます。この新しいホールを本拠地とするのがマイケル・スターン率いるカンザス・シティ交響楽団。収録されているのは、ヒンデミットのウェーバーの主題による交響的変容。この作品は交響曲「画家マティス」と並んでヒンデミットの作品の中では最もよく演奏される曲。1943年にアメリカで作曲され、ヒンデミット独自の和声理論に基づく協和音と不協和音の交差が印象的な作品です。そしてプロコフィエフの組曲「3つのオレンジへの恋」。この作品は1921年にシカゴで上演されたオペラからの6曲を抜粋した作曲者自身の編曲による組曲版。オペラはイタリアの劇作家カルロ・ゴッツィが書いた童話に基づく作品。魔女に呪いをかけられた王子が、3つのオレンジを求めて砂漠に行き、オレンジの一つからあらわれた王女と結婚する、という話で、プロコフィエフらしい遊び心と叙情が感じられる個性的な音楽をマイケル・スターンの新鮮な表現で聴かせてくれます。最後にバルトークの「中国の不思議な役人」組曲。荒々しく不協和な響きが全体を支配する「一幕もののパントマイム」と題された合唱が入るバレエ音楽が全曲のため、20分ほどに短縮された組曲版が比較的よく演奏されます。豊麗さと力強いダイナミズムみなぎる演奏で締めくくられています。

For this 2014 Reference Recordings, Michael Stern and the Kansas City Symphony present three modern orchestral showpieces that have become concert classics: Paul Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber, Sergey Prokofiev's suite from The Love for Three Oranges, and Bela Bartok's suite from The Miraculous Mandarin. To show how recognizable these pieces have become, sample track 2 to hear the famous scherzo from Hindemith's work, and track 7 for the popular march from Prokofiev's ballet. While Bartok's suite might be less familiar to casual listeners and hard to narrow down to one well-known excerpt, it has been increasingly programmed and recorded, and the brilliance of the score has made it a favorite for virtuoso orchestras. It's apparent that the Kansas City Orchestra relished every moment of these performances, and its energy and vitality make these recordings quite enjoyable, despite disappointing aspects of the HDCD recording. At times airless and dry, the softer passages require some boosting to be heard clearly, and the loudest passages really could have benefitted from responsive acoustics, if only to give the music greater dimensions. Still, this is an admirable disc for the exceptional musicianship, and newcomers to modern classical music should give these essential pieces a try.
