When Fantasy decided to record new R&B albums for the Volt label in 1999, it signed veterans like Brenda Holloway and L.J. Reynolds as well as young urban contemporary acts like Angel Sessions. Produced by F.L. Pittman and arranged by Buzz Amato, Andre Rivers, and Preston Glass (among others), Love Ride is a competent, if unremarkable, disc that is quite mindful of what urban radio was playing in the late 1990s. Sessions, whose sexy image was tailor-made for BET and MTV, can be slightly Deniece Williams-ish when she hits the high notes and embraces ballads like "My Love's for You," "Say That You Love Me," and "So Natural With You." On the funkier, hip-hop-ish tunes, however (which are outnumbered by the ballads and slow jams), she tends to favor more of a Destiny's Child-meets-Janet Jackson type of approach. Given that R&B fans associate Volt with classic soul of the 1960s and 1970s, some might feel that Fantasy isn't being true to the Volt name by recording urban contemporary and going after a younger demographic. There's nothing wrong with Volt exploring more modern R&B, though, as long as it strives for quality. Thankfully, Sessions has some chops, charisma, and talent to go with her MTV-friendly image. Though Love Ride isn't a gem and Sessions won't win any awards for being distinctive, the CD is likable more often than not. ~ Alex Henderson
