The title Walking 1/2 Dead was inspired by the lives of residents of Dallas' inner city ghettos -- as members of Kabaal see it, ghetto life can be a living death. Walking 1/2 Dead, the Dallas rap group's first album, is hardly optimistic. Rapping to eerie, atmospheric keyboards, Kabaal members Dawg Oz, L-Dogg, Kreed, and Riddlez favor a very moody, shadowy style of hardcore rap and paint a grim picture of life in Dallas' inner city -- an environment in which poverty, drug addiction and black-on-black crime are everyday realities for parts of the underclass. Kabaal, of course, is hardly the first rap act to address those social problems -- hip-hoppers ranging from Ice-T, Public Enemy, and Ice Cube to Melle Mel and Grandmaster Flash have addressed the same problems and did so in a more focused way. Walking 1/2 Dead is rather uneven and isn't as focused as it could have been -- parts of the CD wander aimlessly. But on its best songs -- which include "Break-N-Bread" and the pessimistic "World's Against Me" -- Kabaal can be compelling. Not a masterpiece but generally likable, this CD let us know that Kabaal had potential. ~ Alex Henderson
