After doing time and cleaning up his personal life, Rick James returns with URBAN RHAPSODY after spending most of the 90's in a creative and commercial funk. Contrition is at the core of this comeback and spending so much time incarcerated gave the Super Freak plenty of time to reflect and write new songs. Consequently, RHAPSODY is James' audio version of "This Is Your Life."
"Mama's Eyes," dedicated to James' late mother, is a mid-tempo jam with muted horn accompaniment. "Good Ol Days" finds James reminiscing about his time at the top with guests Charlie Wilson (Gap Band) and Joanne McDuffie (Mary Jane Girls). Elsewhere, Rappin' 4-Tay drops a rap into the hip-hop/smooth jazz hybrid of the title track and Snoop Doggy Dogg teams up with Bobby Womack to sing about the seedier side of life on "Player's Way." Of course, lasciviousness is a Rick James trademark and he doesn't disappoint with numbers like "So Soft So Wet" and "Favorite Flava."
