In the mid-'80s, Hoboken NJ was the coolest town on the map, with residents ranging from local heroes the Feelies to fledgling drone-popsters Yo La Tengo. The 1999 debut by Hoboken's Birdy recalls these glory days of Coyote Records and Maxwell's with a minimum of nostalgia but just enough jangle-buzz guitars, endearingly plain vocals, and compressed production (courtesy of Hoboken legend Gene Holder) to make you think it's 1986 all over again. Singer/songwriter Stephanie Seymour specializes in unpretentious guitar pop somewhere between the dB's and Paul Westerberg. But where some bands mining this style forget to write actual songs, Seymour has a knack for vaguely familiar, instantly memorable choruses that pop unexpectedly into your head a few days after you listen. "My Brave Face" and the closing rave-up, "Perfect Hand," are especially memorable. SUPERNOMINAL PARAPHERNALIA proves that it's not always an insult to say of a record that you've heard this sort of thing before.
