Roby formerly toiled with highly regarded roots rockers 6-String Drag (one of whose albums was produced by the like-minded Steve Earle). For Roby's solo debut, he's still roots rocking, but he's a lot more skewed, singing amusing semi-surrealistic lyrics about wrong women, dogs, the hassles of living in a dry county, baseball as heard over the radio, and embittered self-pity (often all in the same song) in a voice that sounds like Elvis Costello with a North Carolina drawl. He also plays a sharp, twangy guitar, and is prone to decorate his basically simple three or four chord tunes with Beatle-esque backwards guitars, fuzz bass, violins, distorted electric piano, or whatever the hell else is lying around the studio. If this sounds like it verges on Tom Waits territory, that's because it does (albeit with less of a dark side) and it's to Roby's considerable credit that it doesn't suffer by the comparison.
録音 : ステレオ (Studio)
