Recorded in 1971 for producer Creed Taylor's legendary CTI label, this pairing of bossa nova song stylist Astrud Gilberto with funky soul-jazz tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine is one of those odd combinations that shouldn't work but does. Taylor forgoes the orchestrations in which he often set Gilberto's unique, childlike yet sultry voice. Instead, he puts her in a small combo environment where Turrentine's smoky, sensuous sax work complements Gilberto nicely. In many ways, GILBERTO WITH TURRENTINE is like an early-'70s update of Gilberto's classic 1966 pairing with organist Walter Wanderley, A CERTAIN SMILE, A CERTAIN SADNESS. The CD features the album's original artwork and excellently remastered sound.
