The recipe for TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY'S VIBRATOR is simple: mix together one part Prince-ly funk and one part Stevie Wonder spirituality, then shake vigorously into a frothy jam.
D'Arby is a virtual vocal gymnast, lifting, straddling, pulling at, and jumping over a plethora of funk-rock styles. The title track borrows as much from Cream as it does from Memphis' soul stirrers. The freestyle "Supermodel Sandwich" takes on even more diverse influences, hinting at Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie. But D'Arby's true talents--those of a penultimate post-modern soul-man--come through best on the Wonder-ful ballad "Undeniable," which is as expansively lovely as one of Stevie's own, and breathes on the wings Kevin Wyatt's airy bass and Branford Marsalis' spacious sax solo.
D'Arby is a first-rate songwriter, splendid vocalist and versatile musician who wears his influences broadly. And TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY'S VIBRATOR adds up to a musically intoxicating concoction.
