Although born in Siberia, Israel Baline became the embodiment of American popular song. From his earliest days as a singer in saloons and on street corners to his later years in wealthy seclusion, Irving Berlin--the name bestowed on him by an errant music publisher--seemed never to stop writing songs. A HUNDRED YEARS manages to capture not only the breadth of his output, but also the enormous variety of singers who performed his work. Eddie Cantor, who performed many of Berlin's earliest songs (some in Yiddish) and brought the composer his earliest hits, can be heard singing "Mandy," which was written for a show Berlin did when he was drafted into the army in 1918. By the time the next World War came around, Berlin had conquered both Broadway and Hollywood; his score for the 1942 movie HOLIDAY INN included the now-immortal "White Christmas," which is here sung by a keeper of the crooner flame, Johnny Mathis. A HUNDRED YEARS is a fitting tribute to one of the great songwriters of the century.
