Popular perception says that after the Grateful Dead's glorious recording run for Warner Brothers in the late '60s and early '70s, the band's studio output declined beyond repair. Purist Deadheads will disagree, and THE ARISTA YEARS, a compilation that begins in 1975, will back them up. It illustrates that what the Dead gave up in rural Americana--country, roots-rock and old-school psychedelia--it more than made up for with explorations into other musical styles, innovations in the recording studio, and the search for a new muse or two.
Which is definitely not to say that the Dead simply abandoned the qualities which got it to the dance. What is "Alabama Getaway" if not a Garcia/Hunter rewrite of the same ol' Chuck Berry song? Aren't the live acoustic takes of "Dire Wolf" and "Cassidy" a carbon of the WORKINGMAN'S-era Dead? Weren't "Touch Of Grey" and "Black Muddy River" returns to form for the good ol' Dead after it turned into a platinum act? Yes, on all counts. But THE ARISTA YEARS is far better served by spotlighting the weird, out-there Dead of the band's final two decades. Which means bringing notice to the frenzied downbeat of "Estimated Prophet," the majesty of the "Terrapin Station" suite, the full-frontal rawk of "Hell In A Bucket," and, most of all, the live, jazzed-up reconstruction of "Eyes Of The World," featuring an intense Garcia/Branford Marsalis duel. The Dead was, after all, so much more than a roots-rock band.
