EVERY TIME has everything you'd expect from a Pam Tillis album--a wide range of musical styles, savvy lyrics, her distinctive voice--everything, that is, except Pam Tillis songs. For the first time, Pam the songwriter sits this album out, relying instead on top Nashville tunesmiths for material. Luckily, she's picked a crop of winners. The hard rocking first track, "I Said A Prayer," revs up the old story of a romance made in heaven. At the other end of the spectrum is "Whiskey On the Wound," a terrific hard country ballad about the numbing effects of alcohol. Another standout is "Hurt Myself," in which the singer reels off a list of harmful pursuits (playing with knives, drinking and driving), before concluding "I know where to find you if I need another way to hurt myself." The closing track, "A Great Disguise," is one of Tillis' strongest numbers yet--a country take on "Tears of A Clown" in which the singer admits she's just "a good pretender in a great disguise." While some Tillis originals would have been welcome on EVERY TIME, her wise choice of songs still makes this album a keeper.
