3rd Party's debut album Alive is an enjoyable cross between post-Spice Girls dance-pop and Mariah Carey balladry, highlighted by the uptempo "Can U Feel It" and "Love Is Alive." Like the Spice Girls, the group isn't totally the puppet of their producers -- singer Maria Christensen wrote four songs on the album -- and are racially integrated. In fact, Christensen had established herself as a songwriter before becoming a member of the trio, writing songs for Eternal and Nana Mouskouri. She helps make Alive a cut above the normal dance-pop release, which in turn helps make 3rd Party one of the genre's more promising acts of the late '90s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
