Personnel includes: Malachi Thompson (trumpet); Joe Ford (soprano saxophone); Carter Jefferson (tenor saxophone); Kirk Brown (piano); The Freebop Band. Personnel: Malachi Thompson (trumpet); Joe Ford (alto saxophone); Sonny Seals, Ron Bridgewater, Carter Jefferson (tenor saxophone); Steve Berry (trombone); Kirk Brown (piano); Nasar Abadey, Avreeayl Ra (drums); Dr. Cuz (percussion). Recording information: Riverside Studio (04/20/1993-04/22/1993). Photographers: Michael Wilderman; Ted Gray. A very nice disc from Thompson and his Freebop group. New Standards takes on a nice variety of material, from "If I Only Had a Brain" to a couple of pieces by Thompson himself, including a drastic rearrangement of "Dyhia Malika" that freshens it up and expands it musically. The playing is entertainingly upbeat, keeping the music interesting even when Thompson and the band go off into improvisational wilds. Thompson's trumpet work is outstanding, entertaining and listenable without condescending to the production of light and fluffy jazz. ~ Steven McDonald

商品の紹介

JazzTimes (7-8/95, p.116) - "Malachi's Freebop Band comes charging out of the gate with driving conviction....The energy level here is classic hard bop but the leader's piercing, probing trumpet work takes each piece in a provocative new direction, spurred on by the tight-loose rhythm section..." Jazziz (9/95, p.95) - "...a most underrated trumpet talent....an intentional artistic departure from his previous release...with his larger band....Here he reassembles his smaller ensemble, the Freebop Band. The result is not as fiery, but it's not intended to be. A lot of daring is in the selection of material..."
