There's something very Texas about Tanya Tucker. Born there, everything about her life has been wrought Texas big, from having her first big hit, "Delta Dawn," when she was only 13 years old, and her first greatest-hits collection at the age of 15, to becoming a tabloid star in the 1970s for her chemically fueled and often very public disagreements with her then-boyfriend Glen Campbell. But this Texas girl followed the Hollywood biopic script and staged a remarkable comeback in the '80s after moving to Capitol Records and becoming a kind of solid bridge between old-school traditional female country singers like Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette and contemporary-paced singers like Carlene Carter, Shania Twain, and others who emerged in the '90s. This 1-track set gathers varied sides from Tucker's Capitol comeback period, including the slick Americana of "Lizzie and the Rain Man," the folksy "Strong Enough to Bend," and the perfect modern honky tonk of "It's a Little Too Late." There's obviously a lot more to Tucker's story than what's here, and there's actually a lot more even to her story at Capitol Records than what's here, but taken as a sampler of her time with the label, this set makes a nice introduction to this Texas survivor. ~ Steve Leggett
