Composer Alex Heffes' original score for director Justin Chadwick's bio film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which follows Nelson Mandela's journey from his childhood in a rural village to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa, actually makes its own musical journey through the decades alongside Mandela's. Beginning sparsely with African folk instruments, the score expands into full orchestral territory as Mandela's story deepens (and darkens), then adding electric guitars and synths as things get nearer to the present, all of which gives this presentation a kind of historical sweep that matches Mandela's triumphant story. ~ Steve Leggett
