Personnel: Tom Kell (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, background vocals); Bob Carpenter (vocals, accordion, keyboards, percussion, background vocals); Kenny Edwards (guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, background vocals); David Lindley (guitar, steel guitar, lap steel guitar); Novi Novag, Novi Novog (viola); Russ Kunkel (drums, percussion); Karla Bonoff, Wendy Waldman (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Charles Paakkari. Recording information: Capitol Recording Studios, Hollywood, CA. Photographer: Joel Lipton. Unknown Contributor Roles: David Lindley; Karla Bonoff; Russ Kunkel; Tom Kell; Wendy Waldman . Having parted company with Warner Bros., Tom Kell moved to Vanguard for Angeltown. Vanguard was known for roots music, and given the rootsy, earthy nature of Kell's recordings, it seemed like a logical place for him. The folk/pop/rock artist was far from famous at the time, but his obscurity wasn't due to a lack of talent--on this reflective date, he comes across as an interesting, if a bit undeveloped, blend of Bruce Springsteen, John Cougar Mellencamp and Paul Simon. This isn't to say that Kell is in a class with those artists, but one thing the singer/songwriter/guitarist does have in common with them is a knack for telling meaningful stories. Many of the songs on Angeltown reflect on people Kell has observed in Los Angeles; one gets the impression that Kell has a genuine affection for the city, but isn't blind to its faults. Not a great album but certainly an enjoyable one, Angeltown is worth searching for. ~ Alex Henderson
