This New York singer-songwriter started out mining a fairly traditional acoustic country/folk vein, eventually falling under the influence of artists like Palace's Will Oldham and creating a more modern variant on that style. With her move to Chicago and signing to Drag City (home to Oldham and other avant-country/folkies) she perfected her vision. Her debut CALLING OVER TIME was a sparse, dreamy gem full of lonely-sounding acoustic-based plaints delivered in a somber, timeless fashion. TELESCOPIC represents a sharp left turn. Produced by labelmates Royal Trux (credited here as Adam and Eve), the album has more in common with Helium than Hank Williams. TELESCOPIC is full of slightly skewed alt-pop, the arrangements bearing just a touch of sunny psychedelia and lots of alt-rock attitude. The country influence is nearly absent here, replaced by a postmodernist aesthetic that mates Frost's elliptical imagery with effects-laden guitars and keyboards for a more contemporary, harder-edged sound.
